Zig-Zag is my first piece of bespoke furniture. The overall form is an exploration in angles, from the overall shape of the outer shell right down to the dovetails on the drawer. The parquetry is a practice in precision,  every piece cut by hand with a straight edge, stoppers, and utility knife.

2nd place finish in the Post-Secondary Table category of the AWFS Fresh Wood competition.

Mandala Nouveau Wall Cabinet

I wanted to explore the Art Nouveau style for this cabinet, with particular inspiration coming from Émile Gallé. Instead of the traditional florals or nature scenes I personalized the piece by creating mandalas with the marquetry. The Karelian Birch used as the background veneer was chosen because it could be an Art Nouveau motif on its own.

1st place finish in the Student Occasional Storage category of the ISFD Innovation + Design competition.

Divided Tea Box

The box project was our first self designed piece with the parameters requiring it to have dovetail joints and mostly be produced with hand tools. The interior cherry dividers are visually carried through the lid with inlay strips, the mitered dovetails expanding to carry the cherry down the sides of the box. The distinct cathedral grain pattern in the maple flips along each face of the box, travelling around the piece like a sine wave.

Black Cherry, Soft Maple

This production piece was designed by the instructors to familiarize us with the machines in the shop, introduce us to the use of jigs, wood bending techniques, veneering, and using the spray booth for finishing. We were given artistic license with the veneering and this is my first exploration in marquetry mandalas. I've been drawing mandalas for years and it's been a delight to produce them in other mediums.
